Our Covenant
From Umboldi, a remote village in the foothills of the Finisterre Range in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, we bring you the full goodness of the Southern Pacific. With a guarantee of vanilla beans that are 7 – 8 inches long, we have branded these beans, Umboldi Vanilla (7-8 inches) in honor of the people who grow these super long beans.

Covan’ee Description
After years of waiting we are finally here. With our contacts as missionaries in Papua New Guinea (PNG) from 1986 to 2002, we were able to establish a direct vanilla bean supplier in PNG.
We have not contracted an outside exporter but a family in the village where the vanilla beans are grown. After helping the family group incorporated a business and obtained an export license we are now ready to import directly from the farmers.
The brands Kupdui Vanilla^TM and Umboldi Vanilla^TM are derived from the name of the villages where the vanilla beans are grown. Raikos Vanilla^TM and Madang Vanilla^TM is derived from the district and the province where the villages are located.

Organic?
Almost 100% of the vanilla grown in PNG is grown organically. Meaning there are no chemical pesticides or insecticides used to produce the beans. The reason behind this method of production is because insecticides and pesticides are just too expensive to implement. Due to the remote locations of these farms the cost of transporting the chemicals plus the cost of the chemicals itself, are just too great for the farmers to bear.
However, although the vanilla is being grown organically, in order for the farms to get certified Organic via the USDA regulations, the farmers have to invite (pay for airfare and expenses) for the USDA certifier to travel their farms regularly. Which is an impossible task for these people.
We hope in the future, Covan’ee can provide the means (pay for the certifiers) to travel to our farms and certify them as USDA organic. Until then it is our promise that we will notify you of if there was any chemical insecticides and or pesticides used in the cultivation of the vanillas we provide.
